Today we have an international flavour for our interview. Direct from Ireland, please welcome Irene Prentice. I've personally only known Irene for a short time but I have enjoyed the journey so far. When I first met her I would try to remember her name by singing "Come on Irene" (the song by Dexys midnight runners). Whilst it helped me to remember her name, of course I was mistaken as the correct title to the song was "Come on Eileen". Ah well, you live and learn.

I have loved watching Irene jump into the deep end of our tech team; she has been & continues to be a great asset to RVC. I hope you enjoy this little diversion into her life in government imposed isolation.

Here we go...

What has this time in Isolation been like for you?

To be honest it is not hugely different as I already homeschool my kids. Significantly less driving which I am really enjoying. I have an oven to cook with for the first time in over two years and this has been a time of dusting off recipes and baking again. Lots of fresh bread and cakes to fill up my kids. And I have even managed to finish one of the six books I am currently reading.

What have you been doing to amuse yourself/keep the days apart?

Being woken up by Hendrix at the crack of dawn every day tends to give my day a predictable start! Schooling and cooking gives it structure. Saturday’s are “go and play till I get some jobs done” ; usually gardening. And Sundays have been kicked off with a lazy breakfast, Planetkids and reading/relaxing/games/meal prep in the afternoon and evenings.

What are the top 3 things that you have missed?

Church, tea & coffee with friends and the inevitable chat, having friends look after my kids so I can have an hour to myself.

Any positive experiences out of this time?

Being able to stop and rest when my body was telling me to. Lots and lots of siesta’s.

How many rolls of toilet paper in the house?

None.....we use toilet cloths. Though I do have one in the back of the cupboard that I have had for about a year that is brought out for guests and the kids friends who think it is a ‘bit weird’.

What are you looking forward to?

see my third answer

Have you indulged in any games?

lots.....we play boggle, connect 4, checkers, monopoly, concentration, blokus, uno, pick up sticks, scarbbles, sorry, skip bo, Jenga - though Hendrix is yet to grasp the idea that the stack is meant to stay up for as long as possible!!, and trying to teach Aruna chess,.....the list goes on. unfortunately none of us are good losers!

How many times a day do you wash you hands?

Too many to count

What prayer do you find yourself praying during this time?

“Be still and know I am God”

When my mind is racing and chaotic I find repetition of the Lords Prayer calming. Possibly a throwback to my Church of Ireland days.

Thanks Irene
